We all know very well about the communication process that, it happens between a sender and a receiver and the message sent is to be received and decoded by the receiver and from the feedback the sender gets to know whether the receiver understood it in a way it is intended to be received otherwise the process needs to be repeated.
The communication cycle is very important and when there are two people who wear two hats the message is at the central point. It may be verbal or non-verbal.

Recently, I had put my thoughts on a common situation which we come across everyday especially people living in apartments. I also live in a pretty good apartment that offers good ambiance and facilities but what I found lacking was the communication part between the security personnel at the gate and the residents/guests.
To perform well sometimes we need just communication skill. At times combination of communication with a relevant experience or qualification or domain knowledge. What kind of skill does the security people possess. We believe that they are there to safeguard us from unauthorized entry of outsiders to our premises. This job I feel require sincerity, dedication and few other soft skills.
Last Sunday I visited another apartment as part of an official meeting where I found the Security very energetic, pleasant and dedicated. Being a guest when I stopped my car at the entry he came to me with the visitors book which I entered the details seated in my driving seat, he guided me clearly on where to park my vehicle and how to reach the host. It made me comfortable at that new location. I appreciate that man for his behavior and commitment toward his job.
Now, let me compare the behavior of security at my residence. A similar sized apartment, but there are two of them. They are hesitant to get up from their seat when a guest enters. They will make the guest walk in to their cabin to fill the guest register. One of them is not very comfortable with the language so he murmurs something which the person on the other end finds it very difficult to understand. Several times I have felt the intolerance when they search for my key that's on the key holder.
Is it really difficult to identify the key that is handed over every morning and taken back in the evening with the flat no. labelled. Does this require any qualification/experience ? It is the commitment that they have towards their job. There are certain daily routine activities that get registered in the brain and people are expected to respond quickly out of learning. If this is absent, either it means they are at the wrong place or wrong people at the right place.
What can be done? They need to be trained. There are security agencies who recruit these men and provide services by supplying them to institutions, apartments and other organizations. No one is bothered about the way they behave but I do because changes can be brought about to improve their performance. It's not a mistake, make them aware and help them understand their environment, expectation of residents/guests.
Communicating to people can bring about lot of change and improve situations which is the crux to solve several problems. They need to be very alert then only we can believe that we are secure. When people who lack the above qualities are recruited for security jobs they will have no job security.
