Effective problem-solving in management requires asking the right questions. The classic framework of 6Ws & 1H (Who, What, Where, Which, When, Why & How) helps in gathering critical information to tackle challenges. The Ramayana beautifully illustrates this during the incident of saving Lakshmana.

WHO: When Lakshmana was struck down by Ravana’s arrow, Hanuman identified the right expert to consult—Sushena, the Lankan Royal Physician.
WHAT & WHERE: Sushena instructed Hanuman on what to bring—four life-restoring herbs (including Mruthasanjeevani)—and where to find them—Dronagiri Hills.
WHICH: Reaching the hill, Hanuman faced confusion. Among countless herbs, he couldn’t identify which exact plants were required.
WHEN: The medicine had to be brought before sunrise, adding urgency to the task.
HOW: Rising to the challenge, Hanuman increased his size, detained the sun to gain time, and decided to bring the entire hill to ensure success.
WHY: The ultimate purpose was clear—saving Lakshmana’s life and ensuring the battle against Ravana continued.
As it was Hanuman who went in search of the required herbs, he brought back the entire hill to solve the problem. Otherwise, the inability to identify which herb to pluck, despite knowing everything else, would have left the problem unsolved.
Even when all information is not clear, decisive action, creative thinking, and focusing on the ultimate objective can lead to successful problem resolution.
